Social Security Letter - apostilled
If you are applying for a retirement visa, you will need your Social Security letter. The minimum monthly income is $800 for a single person, $900 for a couple, Spousal Social Security income does not count in the minimum for a couple. What that means is the Social Security income for the primary earner must be $900. The only acceptable income sources are Social Security or a pension plan. Rental or investment income, even with bank statements is NOT acceptable. If you have an adult dependent who is on SSI, their income can be included.
There are some obsolete document lists that state the Social Security income letter must be certified by an Ecuadorian Consulate. That was true until June of 2012, but is no longer required.

which can be provided by the Secretary of State in the state where you lived when they were issued, including the Social Security letter. US embassies or consulates CANNOT Apostille documents. Below is a link to the Hague Convention website that lists all places in the US where documents can be Apostilled. The cost ranges from free to $25 per document. My suggestion is that you first get all your documents notarized and send them all to the respective Sec of State at the same time including a prepaid FEDEX or Express Mail return envelope. Make sure that the return label shows YOU as the sender and YOU as the recipient and do NOT use a PO box address except for Express Mail. FEDEX and all the rest require a physical address.
