The northern coast consists of the eastern region of Lambayeque, the Piura Region and the Tumbes Region. They are characterized by having different climate and geography from the rest of the coast. Right between the 3 hour drive on the Sechura desert, which is located north of the Lambayeque Region and south of the Piura Region, is the evidence of climate change from the common subtropical desert found on the south to visible tropicalization effects of the tropical dry climate or tropical savanna. Examples of this are the tropical dry forests that begin to appear. They are composed of shrubs, thorny trees, carrob trees, faique trees, huayacan trees, hualtaco trees, palo santo trees, ceibo trees and on the coast mangrove forests. It is also a biodiverse area where typical wildlife can be observed such as crocodiles, reptiles, iguanas, boas, pava aliblanca, anteater, bear, sloth (bearh) and many more.

When we got to the border town of Macara the landscape was already changing to a mountain region. From there it was six hours of slow climbing and descending of several mountain chains - until we reached Loja. From there another hour by bus to Vilcabamba to see my friends.

(also in English), are certainly one of the better bus companies in Peru, though you do pay a premium for their service. I think many of their buses also have free Wi-Fi on board, which would be handy with it being such a long journey and you'll be fine leaving your bags with them.

Another option (which will work out at least 50 soles cheaper for cama service) is to do the journey in two legs over two nights. First catching a night bus Lima - Trujillo 8-9 hours, then spend the day looking round Trujillo or chill on the beach in neighboring Huanchaco and then catch another night bus from Trujillo to Tumbes which is around 10-11 hours.

Lima - Trujillo: there are plenty of companies plying this route with Movil Tours (www.moviltours.com) being one of the better options, you can get a cama service for 40-50 soles.

Trujillo - Tumbes: Transportes Emtrafesa and Transportes El Dorado both offer a couple of night services, 35 soles semi-cama or 45 soles cama.

How long have you been in Peru so far? The Peru-Ecuador border officials can be really strict about the 183-day maximum stay per year. But if you're extending a three-month tarjeta andina, you should have no problems coming back in (they'll give you an extra month, at the least – if you want 90 more days, make sure you ask for them).

As for doing Piura to Macara then back again in one day, it should be possible – in theory. Again, those Ecuador officials can be a pain in the rear (metaphorically speaking). If you get a bus to La Tina, you should be able to find out what the situation is before you cross the border to Macara. You might also find a helpful taxi driver to take you across the border and back to La Tina again, but make sure you trust the guy.

“For anyone who doesn't want to risk NOT getting an extension at the border, or paying the $$ in Quito: I just returned from Piura, Peru where at the Ecuador consulate there they will give you a ?6 month? extension for $60, copy of your credit card and passport, proof of travel out of the country (airfare itinerary) and about a one hour wait. Ecuador consulates in other countries may also offer this service but I can only speak for Piura. I had to find out all of this the hard way so I hope this helps anyone in a similar predicament. The law now says that tourists get 90 days a year and they can and will enforce it. Border officials may have mercy on you if they're in a good mood or uninformed.”

Tumbes - Peru

       When I went I just took a bus from the main Cuenca bus station =

that went all the way to the border town of Huaquillas, it was not = particularly comfortable but it was good enough for me and only $7 (the = trip took somewhere around 9 hours, I left cuenca around 1pm and was in = Peru around 11 but you may want to leave earlier to do all the border = crossing stuff in the daylight). At the Cuenca bus station just walk = around and look for one of the offices with “Huaquillas” written on the = walls (there are two buslines that go there but I don't remember the = name of either). Wear a T shirt and bring plenty to drink becuase most = of the trip will be hot and the AC might not work. When in Huaquillas = you have to find a taxi driver to take you to the Imigration office = which is located off of a remote highway where they stamp the passports = (there is another border crossing in the center of the town of = Huaquillas where you could probably cross the border but you would not = be in Peru legally or have been legally stamped out of Ecuador). It = costs about $4 to go from the bus terminal in Huaquillas to the = Immigration office where you will get stamped out of Ecuador and then, = in that same office, stamped into Peru. Then it costs about $12 to go = in taxi from the Immigration office to Tumbes, Peru (This has to be a = special taxi approved by the authorities, look for a taxi sign next to = the immigration building, you should ask the immigration police to call = the taxi as your cell phone probably won't have signal). The special = taxi will take you wherever you want to go in Tumbes. Ask them to take = you to the central park “donde hay muchos hoteles”. Hotels tend to take = dollars. In anticipacion of the return trip I got the authorized taxi = drivers number so that I could cross the border back into Ecuador. Keep = in mind that Claro Ecuador and Claro Peru are different services but you = can always have the hotel desk manager call the taxi once you have the = number giving him a few cents for the cost of the phone call.

I am very busy and won't be able to answer any follow up questions but = this should be enough to get you there and back provided you know at = least a little Spanish.
