+Beginning the Visa Process at Home
+For starters, these are the links I visited to get the basic information about what type of visa I was looking for and the necessary documentation for the application:
 +
 +http://www.ecuador.org/nuevosite/serviciosconsulares_visas_12IX_e.php

 +
 +----
+This website (http://www.igougo.com/story-s1310635-Ecuador-A_Complicated_Process_-_Visa_Registration_in_Ecuador.html) had some helpful information, but lacked a few of the specifics I’ll outline below.
 +
 +----
 +
+To register online: This step was not advertised anywhere, nor was I told personally to do this by anyone, since it is a relatively new step. Do this close to the time that you’ll be going to the office in person. Even a few hours or the night before could work fine, though it seems as if they are prepping the system to give people specific appointment times/days in the future…for now sometime right before should suffice:
 +(1) Go to: www.ministeriodelinterior.gob.ec
+(2) Click on Servicios > en línea > Sistema de Gestión de Visa > Regístrese aquí
 +(3) Fill out the form
+*Make sure you read the directions carefully when finishing the online form and write down your password and NUT number. I encountered some technical weirdness and was never shown the NUT number. One of the workers had to help me by just clicking around and somehow pulling up a screen with the number, but double-registering me at the same time. Your email confirmation should also give you your NUT number (3 letters followed by 7 numbers), but it may take up to 20 minutes for it to arrive to your inbox.
+(4) Print the email and attached pdf
 +
+If you do have to register online at the office, wait for the email but also download the pdf version if you have the NUT number handy (“Descargar Solicitud” option on the same screen as “Regístrese aquí”). Email the solicitud to yourself or put it on a flash drive.
+Then head out to the Multinet/Western Union internet café a block and a half away at Av. 6 de Dic and c/Orellana. Sign online ($.50), print the paperwork and the email confirmation ($.15).
 +
 +----
 +
+This may also be of interest for some of you who want to extend your 12-X visa to a 12-IX visa once you’re already in Ecuador:

+a) A completed Visa Request Form in duplicate - the lady gave us the one page form to fill out. It took minutes to fill in.
 +
+b) 2 passport-sized photos on white background - next door to the migration office was a copy shop that took our photos made copies of them in minutes
 +
+c) A copy of our passport picture page - the copy shop knew which pages to copy
 +
+d) A copy of our stamped passport Ecuadorian visa page - the copy shop did it
 +
+e) A copy of our Visa card (or a  financial statement showing that you have the funds to cover your expenses for the duration of the stay) - the copy shop did this.
 +
+f) A copy of our flight itinerary - again the copy shop did this
 +
+f) A letter of request (solicitud) IN SPANISH for a visa renewal  - the lady wrote a quick letter for us and we went to internet cafe next door to type the letter.
 +
+The letter said, " Yo,  name,  Canadiensa, passaporte No.  _______  solicito uno viso 12-x por ___ dias."  Date
 +
+It took 1/2 hour, cost about $2.50 in copying and computer time. That´s all.
 +
+Then we went back to the migration office, gave the lady our papers and passports, paid $60 each for the extension and were told to return at 3:30 pm. When we returned, our papers had been checked and we were given back our passports with the new big stamp that was notarized and allowed us 38 days more than we asked for! We breathed a sigh of relief.
 +
+All in all, it was an easy process but it has to be done JUST a few days BEFORE your visa runs out. If you go to the office too far ahead of time, they´ll just tell you to come back later. If you go 2 weeks earlier they´ll keep your passport and all your information and it´ll take 2 weeks to do.
 +
+So, there was a happy ending to the story as we still had time to catch a bus to Otavalo and not to the Colombian border as planned. What a great day!

+I just did that last weekend at the Tumbes border with Peru and it worked fine. You just have to make sure you leave the country on the day your 6 month tourist visa expires then come back into Ecuador the following day. Good luck!

 +Visa Extension
+Unless things have changed You do not have to leave the country to obtain the 12-X visa. Just make sure you apply with at least 30 days left on your 12-IX and provide all of the required documentation and you should not have any problems.
 +
+I used this exact scenario in June of 2011. Then from the 12-X I transitioned right into a 12-V student visa which I have been on ever since and have not had to leave the country once.
 +
+If you run out of time you can leave and come back in with just your passport which will give you a 90 day T-3 visa. This is not the same as the 12-X. You will then be able to apply for a 12-X visa which will give you another 90 days.
 +
+By the way, you can get a 180 day 12-IX once a year, a 90 day 12-X once a year and use the 90 days you get with just your passport (T-3) once a year. Do the math. That adds up to 360 days. You can then leave for five days and start the process all over again.
 +
+Cynthia, my understanding is that you cannot leave the country while your residency application is being processed. I have not asked that question directly at the Ministerio but that is what several people I know have been told.
 +
+I believe there are some scenarios being discussed here that are different from yours. So be careful with this information. It does get confusing between the different types of visas. Depending on which visa you are talking about and your individual situation the scenario does change. Be careful.
 +
+Here is the link to the Ministerio's website with the requirements for all of the different visas. If you want to see the requirements for the different types of residency you will have to switch back to the Spanish version of the site. The English version does not show the residency visas.

 +
+Here is the link to the embassy website in Washington, D.C.
 +
 +http://www.ecuador.org/nuevosite/serviciosconsulares_visas_e.php
 +
+Beware, requirements for applying in country differ from applying in your home country. They also differ from the embassy to the consulates and from consulate to consulate. I believe they also differ from ministeriro office to ministerion office.
 +
+My advice is and always has been to go to the person you are going to apply to, ask them what they require and then give it to them with all of the i's dotted and t's crossed. I have never had a problem following this method.
 +
+If you would like more information about my experiences with visas or help with this process you can reach me at greg@medionenterprises.com.

+My friend did her 3-month T-3 Visa, then got a 6-month 12-IX visa, then after the 9 months she had to get a special extension VISA (which required a letter of invitation from an arts group she is involved in that they needed her here for a couple more months), because she would not qualify for another T-3 until the year (meaning 365 days, not calendar year) was up.
 +
+...To add to the confusion, that is my understanding.
 +#6 - Lisa - 02/06/2013 - 11:11
+I had an extended 180 day Visa that expired January 12th. I had completed my Residency application at Immigration on January 7th. I asked if I could then leave the country. The immigration official said no, since my current Visa would expire on the 12th, just a few days away. She said I must wait for my new one (residency). If I did leave, I would not be able to re-enter the country without a Visa. I was told the wait for my residency Visa would be approximately two months. It would be helpful to know for certain if I can indeed leave with just my $30.00 application receipt.
 +#5 - Cynthia - 02/05/2013 - 22:49
+All the VISA info and the residency programs sound so confusing. I have seen so much varying info as well as costs of getting one. For someone who wants to move and spend their lifetime in ECuador I would love definitive info and costs. A survey on this would be very helpful to many of us. It really sounds extremely confusing. Thank you for all your hard work to bring the country to us. I really enjoy reading these.

 +Another 90 day visa
+My husband and I had leave for 7 days. We went to Mancora, Peru, and had a great time. When we came into Ecuador, we were given another 90 day visa. Those folks at the immigration office know what they are doing
 +#3 - Pam Feltman - 02/05/2013 - 15:12
+I don't know how you do that and its hard to imagine the immigration office telling you that unless your last day is the last day of the calendar year and then the day you return is a new year. I was of the impression your tourist VISA is based on a calendar year. So, if you have used 6 months from Jan. to June, for example, I don't think you can leave for one day and return the next unless it is after Jan. 1 of the following year. I hope you get a better take on this from others. Good luck.
 +#2 - Kim - 02/05/2013 - 15:12
+I did almost the same thing in December, I left on the 15th and my visa expired on the 22nd. I returned on the 28th and my 90 day visa was in effect.
+FYI If you have applied for your residency visa and paid the $30. You can do the same thing as long as you keep the receipt. if you leave Ecuador the receipt will get you back in even if your tourist visa has expired.

 +
 +
 +
+The reason that 12-IX visas are being issued in Machala is that the Cuenca immigration office is overloaded with residency visa applications.
 +
+What is the status of your residency visa? If the application has been filed and you have a receipt for the initial $30, you have nothing to worry about. Just wait until your residency visa is ready. You will get an email from immigration at that time. If on the other hand you have not applied or are not planning on a residency visa, you are allowed by law to have two 90 day T-3 visas which is just a stamp in your passport. If you have not used them up, they should kick in automatically when the 12-iX expires. That happened to me in December and that is what I told in Cuenca
 +
+We are in the visa service business in Cuenca and may be able to help you.

 + ----
+I have never heard of an office in Machala (but I am not 100% certain). You might want to try Guayaquil if Cuenca isn't working. I helped some people get their visa in Guayaquil and the process was very straight forward. I would ask another officer in Cuenca. To get an extension it doesn't matter what office you use. If you need more help just let me know. I think they are just brushing you off. The couple also got an additional 180 days. They have relaxed on when to turn in the visa extension paperwork but I would still recommend that you do it sooner rather than later. Thirty days is a good idea. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
